Sweet and sour pork with vegetables

Today I would like to introduce you to Orient flavors, with a really tasty and enjoyable result. You do not even have to buy sweet and sour sauce, we will do everything from scratch and you will notice the difference.

Sweet and sour pork is one of the most popular recipes from Chinese gastronomy. Who hasn’t ever tasted it? Together with chicken, pork is one of the meats that had better combine with sweet and sour flavors. That fact, taken in conjunction with vegetables al dente, the result is simply spectacular.

Note: it is a laborious recipe, but if I happen to have spare time again, I will not hesitate to repeating the experience.

Sweet and sour pork with vegetables

Ingredients for 4 people

½ kg of pork meat
1 green pepper
1 carrot
4 cambray onions
1 piece of leek
2 cloves of garlic
2/3 cup of soy sauce
1/2 cup of all-purpose flour
1 cup of  ketchup
1/3 cup of red wine vinegar (if you do not have it, you can also use a bit less of balsamic vinegar)
2 tablespoons of honey
1 teaspoon of ginger powder
extra virgin olive oil
pepper

Directions

Chop the pork into medium size cubes and the garlic into small cubes (you can also crush garlic).

Chop all vegetables into medium size pieces and reserve them.

In a glass or plastic bowl (avoid metal or stainless steel), mix soy sauce, chopped garlic cloves, flour and ginger. Add the cubes of pork meat and let it marinate in the fridge for the whole night.

Next morning, put a bit of flour in a plate, season with pepper and stir it.

Take meat out from fridge and remove the excess of marinated sauce. Coat them in flour with pepper and fry them in a skillet with hot oil.

Brown them for all faces and put them in an absorbent paper so that they do not have that much fat.

In a wok or big skillet (different to the one where you have fried meat), put one tablespoon of the oil in which you have fried the meat and add the chopped vegetables. Fry them lightly for around 12 minutes, stirring from time to time so that they do not get burnt

Mix ketchup, vinegar and honey.

Add the pork to the skillet and finally, add the mixture of ketchup, vinegar and honey.

Stir it and cook it over a low heat for 3 minutes until it boils.

To be considered

You do not have to add salt, since with soy sauce it will be already salty.

It is a very tasty dish, you can take advantage of its sauce to accompany white rice ( it’s fantastic with basmati).
